JAN KAREL DONATUS VAN BEECQ (1638-1722) Dutch Men o’ War at anchor off a jetty in a calm sea, signed and dated 1678, oil on canvas, 58.5cm x 91.5cm Provenance: Bt. Christie's New York on 5th June 1980, lot 11, for $8,250. According to Anthony du Boulay's notes a letter from Ian Kennedy, previously Curator of Paintings at Kansas City, underlines the quality of the work and describes the artist as a follower of Van de Velde Junior.

Laubin. Similar to the "Fish Face Tooth", except the tip of this example resembles a bird's head, with engraved eyes, beak and head feathers, rather than a fish. Obverse depicts an active whaling scene and reverse depicts a British whaleship at anchor off a hilly coastline dotted with palm trees. Wide floral bands and thin scalloped borders encircle the base and tip below the bird's head. PAIR OF MINIATURES ON IVORY. American or English first quarter-19th century. Finely painted husband and wife in matching gold-colored locket frames. In the back are pieces of opalescent glass with locks of hair and blue glass ovals backed with stamped foil. Each blue oval has an anchor of seed pearls. The woman's frame has separated but the pieces are intact with minimal damage. The man's frame is still together but the hair and anchor are damaged with loss and the ivory has an age split. Both are in fitted leather cases 3 3/4''h. The man's frame was not taken apart & examined to minimize loss & damage. There is only the front glass. There is one large crack on the man that runs the length of the ivory by his face and through his shirt.
